When Are You Coming Home?

StylemasterWe have all heard the saying: “Home is where you hang your hat.” I have lived that way for my adult life. Since turning 21 I have lived in six places in Israel, four in Montreal, 3 in the Greater Toronto Area, two in Japan, two in Ottawa, and am now on my third apartment in California. twenty addresses in 28 years… that’s a bit nuts, but it is what it is. I am currently negotiating the renewal of my lease (which I expect to do in a couple of weeks), and if that doesn’t work we will be looking at twenty-one addresses.

And so, when I speak with my friends in Canada, I have to step back. Most of them ask me “When are you coming home?’” There are many different meanings to this question, and depending on the person asking, I have to establish if they mean:

  • When are you coming to Canada for a visit? or
  • When are you moving back here for good?

CanadaFor the first question, I am thrilled to say that, assuming I get my Covid test back this afternoon, I am flying to Canada tomorrow. I have lived in three Canadian cities (I have actually lived in five, but if we count the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area as one, then it is three) and I will be visiting each… and a couple more. My sons live in Oakville (GTHA), but my godson lives in Strathroy. My sons want me to take them for dinner to a restaurant in Niagara Falls, which is a third city. I have friends all over the GTHA, and so during the six days I will be there, I will either travel to or meet friends from Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, Milton, and Hamilton. I will then drive east and spend a day in Ottawa, and then a few days in Montreal (which will include visits to the South Shore, Laval, and the North Shore). I’ll drive back to the GTA for the last couple of days, and fly home on Tuesday the 27th.

As for the second question: I am likely not in the USA permanently. I am happy where I am, but that can change in a heartbeat. I might move back to Canada this fall… or in three years. I don’t know. What I do know is this: For the moment, I have an apartment in California; I have a California driver’s license and bank accounts; I pay taxes in California; Most important, at the end of the day when I come in from a long day of work, golf, walking the dog, or smoking cigars with friends… I come in and hang my hat to my apartment in Westlake Village, California.

So when you ask When are you coming home? please know that tomorrow I am not going home… I will be visiting Canada to see my family and friends. I will be going home on the 27th, where I will once again hang my hat.

I am really excited to be going to visit my kids and my friends… and while it might be again one day, Canada is not currently home.

For those of you who are wondering, I am not taking any time off… I will be working throughout my trip, so do not expect this blog to go dark anytime soon.

See you in Canada!
