Honourable Mention: ‘Most Unclear Directions’
On Saturday I awarded the Runner-Up to the ‘Most Unclear Directions’ award. I think this one deserves an honourable mention. Yesterday I Meghan, the lovely waitress at Mahi Mah’s on Virginia Beach, how many shrimp were in the half-pound bucket of shrimp dinner. Answer: ‘Well, there’s about a half-pound of them’. For the record, she…

The runner up for the ‘Most Unclear Directions’ goes to…
I finished my book last night, so I asked the front desk clerk where I could find a bookstore. ‘Oh, there’s one in one of the shopping centres around here. I’m not sure which one.’ Her assistant, ever the yes-man, confirmed that there is indeed a bookstore in one of the (seventeen) shopping centres in…

Patch ’em if you got ’em!
You probably noticed this morning that yesterday was Patch Tuesday. Microsoft released 22 patches, most of which addressed issues in the OS but the last of them was for Office Visio 2003 SP3. Make sure that if you have automatic patching disabled that you take the time to approve all of your patches manually! -M

Under the Wire Sometimes Brings Unexpected Success: Microsoft’s Second Chance Free program deadline forced my hand – to positive results!
(Originally written in July, 2006… reposted without editing by request!) I know this is a few weeks late… sorry. So we all know that for a few months ending June 30th Microsoft was running one of its famous ‘Second Chance Free’ promotions. Last year I had taken advantage of it with a couple of exams,…

A new look, same great content ;)
I decided to change the look-and-feel of The World According to Mitch. It’s pretty simple with WordPress, I saw a template that I liked and chose it. Don’t worry… everything else will stay the same… for now! -M

Another week-end in the books…
This week-end actually turned out better than I had expected… my parents came into town. Aaron had an overnight event at school Friday evening, so we took the parents (with Gilad) for dinner. Saturday morning I picked Aaron up, then Theresa and I met Stephen Rose at his hotel and spent a few hours with…

Upgrading Virtual PC machines to Hyper-V
Recently I sat a Microsoft Partner training class to prepare me for a new product. The virtual hard drives (VHD) and the virtual machines (VMC) were distributed to work on Virtual PC on Windows 7. Someone asked the instructor if the machines could be used in Hyper-V, so we decided to try it out. Of…

Why one should be careful with words…
In my class this morning I was espousing the virtues of PowerShell. I sad that it could do ANYTHING, and that I was pretty sure that if I asked him to, my friend Sean Kearney could write me a PowerShell script that would tie my shoes for me. Later in the day I glanced at…

A chip off the old block…
This morning as I drove my (nearly) 13-year-old son off at school I asked how he thought he would do on his report card (which come out today). He told me he was confident about some subjects, but not French. ‘It would be easier if they hired pretty young blonde French teachers instead of old,…

Regarding External Hard Drives
For the moment I am taking down the article I wrote about Seagate GoFlex drives. This week I lost 700GB of data on one and until they are ready to help (without my buying their software) I think it is a HUGE #Fail on their part and they do not deserve my endorsement.

Airport Security
Yes, airport security is getting tougher… but for the frequent flier there are a number of options to make the experience easier, beginning with BEING COOPERATIVE. I got to #YYZ this morning without having checked in ahead of time, went through US Customs (was randomly selected for secondary screening!), then went through security and was…

Windows Automated Installation Kit–Save your time!
Some of you (chiefly those interested in Windows deployment) may have noticed that there seems to be a new Windows AIK available for download today (actually October 28, 2010). Please DO NOT rush out to download it. Here’s why, direct from Jeremy Chapman (Windows Deployment & Compatibility, Microsoft Corp): “The reason for the edit was…

Flying the Friendly Skies
As I write this I am aboard a WestJet 737-700 plane bound for Halifax, my third (of five) TechDays Canada city. Halifax will almost be a forced two-day vacation for me (excepting my TechDays duties) because I (very uncharacteristically) forgot my cell phone at home. I will still be on-line via e-mail and such, but…

Windows Phone 7… Catch It!
Over the last few weeks I have had plenty of opportunity to play with a number of Windows Phone 7 devices, and I am loving it! Windows Phone 7 is as friendly and simple as any other Phone OS I have come across, and much moreso than the myriad Mobile 6, 6.1, and 6.5 devices…
