Another week-end in the books…
This week-end actually turned out better than I had expected… my parents came into town. Aaron had an overnight event at school Friday evening, so we took the parents (with Gilad) for dinner. Saturday morning I picked Aaron up, then Theresa and I met Stephen Rose at his hotel and spent a few hours with…

Microsoft Certification Exams Going Up.
It has been ten years since I took my first Microsoft certification exam. At the time it cost $100 (USD) for the privilege. Shortly thereafter (I suspect sometime within 2001) that cost increased to $125 (USD) per exam, which is where it is today. Recently Microsoft Learning announced that on July 1st (August 1st in…

Cover Your A$$ – Secure Your WiFi Now!
I honestly hate saying ‘I told you so.’ For years I have been telling everyone who will listen (and a lot of people who didn’t want to) about the importance of securing wireless networks. I’ve told stories about the possible consequences, and have scared some of them into doing the right thing. Unfortunately far too…

IT Pro Connection & the TechNet Flash
A couple of weeks ago Microsoft released Microsoft iSCSI Software Target for download, and I was thrilled. I immediately decided to write about it, but before publishing what would end up the first of three articles, I decided to ping my buddy Rick Claus, IT Pro Evangelist for Microsoft Canada, and ask him if he…

Is VMware Still the King? How long can that last?
Recently Computer Dealer News (www.computerdealernews.com) released a list of Microsoft’s top 12 rivals. If you read through the analyses on the list some of the companies listed should be keeping Mr. Ballmer awake at night. However one rival on that list – VMware – has a very different tune. It is folly to deny that…

Creating a Multi-OS Deployment Point with MDT!
Hey folks, I know for months you’ve been on me because the screen shots in my Multi-OS Deployment Share post were lost. Today I am glad to say that I have created a video of it for the DPE team, and am glad to share it with you here! Remember, this video creates the deployment…

The Student Has Become The Master!
Monday evening I attended the monthly user group meeting of the Wellington Waterloo IT Pro User Group (http://www.wwitpro.com/) in Kitchener, Ontario. The topic for the evening was called Windows 7 Deployment as presented by Sean Kearney (yes, THE Sean Kearney, a.k.a. The Energized Tech, a.k.a. (the former) Friday Funny Guy!) from SWMI Consulting Group and…

Upgrading Virtual PC machines to Hyper-V
Recently I sat a Microsoft Partner training class to prepare me for a new product. The virtual hard drives (VHD) and the virtual machines (VMC) were distributed to work on Virtual PC on Windows 7. Someone asked the instructor if the machines could be used in Hyper-V, so we decided to try it out. Of…

Why one should be careful with words…
In my class this morning I was espousing the virtues of PowerShell. I sad that it could do ANYTHING, and that I was pretty sure that if I asked him to, my friend Sean Kearney could write me a PowerShell script that would tie my shoes for me. Later in the day I glanced at…

A Do-it-Yourself SWMI? No sweat!
Ok, let’s be honest. We all know that we need to secure our Active Directory infrastructures, but many of us are not entirely sure how. You may even know that Group Policy is a great tool to do it centrally, but with literally thousands of Group Policy settings available in Windows Server 2008 R2, where…

Creating a Bootable USB Key
It seems that some of my articles got chopped during the move to WordPress. Doh! Here are the simple instructions to create a bootable USB key: Open a Command Prompt session with Administrator privileges. Run the Disk Partition utility (diskpart.exe) Type List Disk to see a list of drives on your computer. Determine which is…

A chip off the old block…
This morning as I drove my (nearly) 13-year-old son off at school I asked how he thought he would do on his report card (which come out today). He told me he was confident about some subjects, but not French. ‘It would be easier if they hired pretty young blonde French teachers instead of old,…

Regarding External Hard Drives
For the moment I am taking down the article I wrote about Seagate GoFlex drives. This week I lost 700GB of data on one and until they are ready to help (without my buying their software) I think it is a HUGE #Fail on their part and they do not deserve my endorsement.
